DigitalSignage.com is a hosted cloud platform operated by MediaSignage Inc. Besides the SignStudio web editor, the platform offers an open REST API and SDK so that developers can automate work that would otherwise be done by hand in SignStudio, and connect signage to other business systems.

This page is an overview, not an endpoint reference. The API specification, base URLs and credentials are provided to developers directly when access is set up. Earlier versions of this page listed hostnames, packages and sample calls that were not accurate; they have been removed.

What the API is for​

Typical reasons to use the REST API:

  • Automation: update content or screen settings from a script instead of doing it manually in SignStudio.
  • Integrations: push data from a back-office, POS, inventory or reporting system to screens.
  • Provisioning at scale: set up many locations or accounts in a repeatable way.
  • White-label and multi-account work: white-label branding and SignDashboard multi-account management are Enterprise features of the hosted platform.

Many integrations do not need the REST API at all. Live data widgets (weather, RSS news, social, stocks, sports), web pages, and the documented POS integrations are configured inside SignStudio. See Integrations below.

How to get API access​

API access is arranged with the DigitalSignage.com team rather than through a self-service developer portal.

  1. Create an account (the free plan covers the first 3 screens) or use your existing account.
  2. Contact DigitalSignage.com at support@digitalsignage.com or toll-free +1-877-344-7446 and describe the integration you want to build.
  3. For white-label, multi-account and larger integration projects, ask about the Enterprise plan. Enterprise pricing is shown in the public price calculator.

The team will confirm whether the REST API, the SDK, or a built-in SignStudio feature is the right fit, and will provide the current documentation and credentials.

Authentication, in general terms​

Access to the REST API is tied to a DigitalSignage.com account and requires credentials issued for that account. General good practice applies:

  • Keep credentials on your server. Never embed them in a web page, a mobile app or a component that runs on a public screen.
  • Use a dedicated user for integrations, with only the permissions it needs (SignStudio supports role-based users and multi-user accounts).
  • Rotate credentials when a team member or contractor leaves.

SignService: the local player API​

SignService is a separate, local API that runs on SignPlayer. It is used for IoT and kiosk scenarios on the same network as the screen, not for managing the cloud account.

  • Base URL: https://SIGNPLAYER_IP:8094 (self-signed HTTPS certificate)
  • POST /player/sendEvent?eventName=...&store=0|1 sends an event with JSON data to the player
  • POST /player/registerEvent?eventName=...&url=... registers a callback URL for an event
  • POST /player/unregisterEvent?eventName=...&url=... removes a registered callback
  • GET /player/listEvents lists registered callbacks

What is SignService?​

SignService is a local API that runs on SignPlayer at port 8094 over HTTPS with a self-signed certificate. A sensor, script or gateway on the same network can send events with JSON data to the player, register callback URLs, and list registered callbacks. SignStudio scenes bound to an event update when it arrives.
